Kirtan
devotional chanting
Welcome to the Yoga of Sound…
Kirtan means ‘to sing the name’ – the name of the divine, of your own understanding.
Kirtan is an ancient chanting practice, originating in India, and belonging to Bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion. In Kirtan we sing mantras, typically in Sanskrit, designed to invoke meditative states of contemplation, celebration, freedom, expression, reflection, devotion and bliss.
Kirtan can lift your spirits, nurture deep spiritual connection and foster real self-love.
The power of chanting is profound and immediate: there’s nothing like joining voices together and singing!! But Kirtan goes deeper than simply singing. Kirtan is a chance to touch into the power of vibration and sound as a medium to express and embody yourself, and your intentions. The practice of devotional chanting offers us an opportunity to experience emotional freedom, catharsis and to gain profound insights into ourselves, the psyche, consciousness and a non-dual understanding of reality.
In a nutshell, Kirtan can help you find your voice, your self-confidence, your true alignment and authentic expression, and it can help you connect to the Divine – whatever that means or feels like to you. This is why I love it, and why I’m passionate about sharing this amazing practice.
After training with Nikki Slade in 2022, I am proud to say I have been leading Kirtan publicly ever since.
As a vocalist leader, I typically lead call and response chants, and am a self-accompanying musician (harmonium and guitar) and drummer (dholak and djembe). I am also available as a support drummer to other Kirtan leaders on both dholak and djembe.
I am also available for Private Kirtans for functions and celebrations - please drop me a line here to inquire.
